In great sadness for India, Vinesh Phogat’s petition for a joint Olympic silver medal at the Paris 2024 Olympics was rejected by the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS) on Wednesday. Vinesh entered the women’s 50kg wrestling final at the Paris 2024 Olympics after some great fights, which included victory over Japanese world champion Yui Susaki. However, on the morning of her final, Vinesh was 100 grams over the permitted limit and was therefore disqualified.

Following the CAS verdict on Wednesday, which said, “The application filed by Vinesh Phogat on August 7, 2024 has been dismissed”, the Indian Olympic Association (IOA) reacted strongly, saying it was exploring all possible options .

IOA President PT Usha expressed her shock and disappointment. “The dispositive part of the August 14 decision, which rejects Vinesh’s request to receive a shared silver medal in the women’s 50 kg category at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, has significant implications for her in particular and the sporting community in general”, said the IOA. in a statement.

“The marginal discrepancy of 100 grams and the resulting consequences have a profound impact, not only in terms of Vinesh’s career, but also raise serious questions about ambiguous rules and their interpretation.

“The IOA firmly believes that outright disqualification of an athlete for such a weight infraction on the second of two days warrants further examination. Our legal representatives duly brought this to light in their submissions before the Sole Arbitrator.”

The IOA called for a rule change to take player welfare into account. He added that other legal options were being explored.

“The matter involving Vinesh highlights the stringent and possibly inhumane regulations that do not take into account the physiological and psychological stresses that athletes, especially female athletes, suffer. It is a stark reminder of the need for more equitable and reasonable standards that prioritize athletes’ well-being”, said the IOA.

“In light of the CAS order, the IOA continues to fully support Ms. Phogat and is exploring other legal options. The IOA is committed to ensuring that Vinesh’s case is heard. It will continue to uphold justice and fairness in sports, ensuring that the rights and dignity of athletes and everyone involved in sport are always respected.

“We appreciate the continued support and understanding from our stakeholders, athletes and the public.”
