Kolkata Knight Riders mentor Gautam Gambhir recalled how team co-owner Shah Rukh Khan once helped him overcome his weak phase with the bat. The incident happened during IPL 2014, when Gambhir, the team’s captain at the time, did not perform well at the start of the edition and thought about going down at one point. That’s when SRK told him not to do it. The result saw Gambhir leading KKR to the title.
Overall, Gambhir has led KKR to two IPL titles, with another coming in the 2012 edition. Ahead of IPL 2024, Gambhir joined KKR as a team mentor.
“I haven’t been able to score a run in four games. I’ve said this countless times, I think he’s the best owner I’ve worked with. It’s not because I’m part of KKR now or I was part of KKR,” Gambhir said in KKR Knights Podcast.
“I don’t think so, in the seven years I was captain of KKR, we had a conversation about cricket, even for seven minutes, apart from that phase I was going through. The only thing he said to me was, ‘until you’re here, you won’t abandon yourself,'” he added.
Gambhir further praised Shah Rukh, citing the trust the Bollywood actor reposed in him.
“Imagine someone, as an owner, who has been a great entrepreneur, not even talking about cricket or asking anything about his decision making. He trusted you in making decisions,” he said.
“I’m not saying I made all the right decisions. But he never questioned my decisions, that is the trust he placed in me,” concluded Gambhir.
