Courtesy of his 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) show, Rajasthan Royals all-rounder Riyan Parag has reportedly emerged as a hot candidate for India’s 2024 T20 World Cup squad. Ahead of the Board of Control for Cricket in India’s announcement (BCCI), Parag’s name was discussed by many experts as a possible all-rounder option in the middle order. But, as the selection committee named the squad of 15 members, in addition to 4 reserves, there was no place for Parag. However, the Rajasthan Royals star admitted that he didn’t even consider himself a serious part of this race.

Parag spoke to the media after Rajasthan’s defeat against Sunrisers Hyderabad on Thursday, where the topic of their T20 World Cup defeat came up. Giving a scathing response to a reporter’s question, Parag sarcastically said that he was not even a candidate to play this IPL.

“Not really. Until last year, I wasn’t even in contention to play in the IPL, right?” he said when asked about the disappointment of not making it into India’s T20 World Cup squad.

The Assam all-rounder even revealed that he had quit social media but was still aware of the rumors surrounding his potential selection for the T20 World Cup.

“So I heard some rumors. I’m not on social media anymore. I heard some noises here and there, but I’m glad they’re using my name for the right reasons now. I really wasn’t thinking anything. I’m really happy for the boys at our team, especially Sanju Bhaiya, for being called up. It will be great for our country and we hope to bring the World Cup home,” he added.

Parag has emerged as one of the most consistent players in this IPL, ranking 4th in the list of highest-scoring batsmen. He has 409 runs in 10 matches to his name at an average of 58.43 and a strike rate of 159.14.
