Mumbai Indians face an early exit from Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, with a solitary defeat preventing them from becoming the first team to exit playoff contention this campaign. Under Hardik Pandya’s captaincy, Mumbai Indians have barely fared well as a unit, with subpar performances from established stars as well as poor leadership that has cost the team crucial moments in the season so far. With just three more games to go in the league stage of MI’s campaign, not all hope is completely lost.

Mumbai Indians are still in contention to qualify for the playoffs, although their chances of finishing as one of the top four teams are slim.

How can Mumbai Indians qualify for IPL 2024 playoffs?

Condition 1:Firstly, the Hardik Pandy-led team has to win all three remaining games in the IPL 2024 league campaign. MI are scheduled to face the mighty Sunrisers Hyderabad next, with matches against Kolkata Knight Rider and Lucknow Super Giants to follow.

Condition 2: I hope no other team crosses the 12-point mark in the IPL 2024 standings. Currently, SRH, LSG and CSK already have 12 points. Consequently, at least two of these franchises would need to lose their remaining matches in the league campaign. With KKR and RR already occupying first and second place with 16 points each, it is impossible for Mumbai to topple them. In fact, big wins against other teams for KKR and RR would only benefit MI.

Condition 3: Mumbai Indians have a net run rate of -0.356 currently. Even if MI wins all their remaining matches, they will need to do so by large margins to reach a positive NRR. But this may not be enough if the NRR of other teams with 12 points is better than MI.

While you never say never in a sport like cricket, it is fair to say that Mumbai Indians’ chances of qualifying for the IPL 2024 playoffs do not inspire much hope in the hearts of their fans.
