With Mumbai Indians’ campaign all but over and dusty in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024, there is little motivation for the players to continue giving their best. Players like Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Hardik Pandya, etc. They are established stars, but they have failed to improve Mumbai Indians’ campaign this season. As there remains a threat of their performance slipping further, with MI unlikely to qualify for the playoffs, former Indian cricketer Deep Dasgupta feels there is still “pride” to play for.
Urging Rohit not to take his foot off the gas, Dasgupta urged the veteran opening batsman to think about his upcoming assignments and end the IPL campaign on a high note.
“You are playing for team pride, you are playing as a professional cricketer and also for your pride. You don’t want to play and you don’t want to play. Every time you cross the line, you want to do your best,” Dasgupta told Star Sports.
Dasgupta also believes that next year’s IPL mega auction could be a key motivating factor for Rohit to perform well. With Hardik now leading the franchise, many have suggested that Rohit could decide to leave the franchise after the season.
“Let’s not forget that next year is the big auction. These are the last opportunities that all professional cricketers have. Even if the team doesn’t qualify, at least to put on a good show and tell everyone, ‘Do you know what, I’m there,'” Dasgupta said.
Dasgupta also feels that it is important for Rohit to continue performing, keeping in mind his next assignment, which is the 2024 T20 World Cup with the Indian team.
“He is an integral part of the team as he is the captain, but he also sets the tone at the top of the order. This is what he has been doing for a year and a half,” he added.
