Kolkata Knight Riders players had a harrowing experience when they were forced to spend a night in Varanasi after their flight from Lucknow to Kolkata was diverted several times due to bad weather. After the massive 98-run victory over Lucknow Super Giants on Sunday, the Shreyas Iyer-led team left on Monday evening for Kolkata at 5:45 pm. The team’s arrival was scheduled for 7:25 pm. But the charter flight had to be diverted first to Guwahati and then to Varanasi after adverse weather conditions made it impossible for the plane to land in Kolkata.
The KKR media team provided an update at 8:46 pm, saying, “Due to bad weather over Kolkata, the KKR charter flight has been diverted to Guwahati. We have just landed here.” Then another update at 9:43 pm said, “We are cleared to fly back to Kolkata now from Guwahati. Estimated arrival: 11 pm.” However, the ordeal was not over for the players and support staff as several attempts to land the flight failed, forcing officials to divert the flight mid-air to Varanasi.
“The flight took off from Guwahati to Kolkata, it was scheduled to land at 11 pm. It was not possible to land again due to bad weather, despite several attempts. :15h.
The KKR team spent the night in Varanasi and will travel to Kolkata this afternoon.
“The team would check in to Varanasi hotel for overnight stay. Return flight to Kolkata to be arranged on Tuesday afternoon (May 7),” the KKR media team said in the final update at 3 am.
Fortunately, KKR’s next game will be against Mumbai Indians at the Edens Garden on May 11. The two-time champions will face Gujarat Titans in Ahmedabad on May 13 and Rajasthan Royals in Guwahati on May 19 in their final two league matches.
