The BCCI is likely to divide the prestigious Ranji Trophy into two halves, with the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy white-ball tournaments being held in between for the 2024-25 season. It is learned that a draft proposal for restructuring the domestic cricket calendar for the 2024-25 season has been sent to the Council’s apex council. The proposal was made after consultation with BCCI secretary Jay Shah, India captain Rohit Sharma, chairman of selectors Ajit Agarkar, coach Rahul Dravid and National Cricket Academy chief VVS Laxman.

Another proposal is to end the CK Nayudu Trophy draw, which will also be organized with a new scoring system.

According to the proposed new format, five Ranji Trophy league matches will be followed by white-ball tournaments – Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy and Vijay Hazare Trophy. The remaining two Ranji league matches as well as the knockout stage games will be held after the conclusion of the two white-ball tournaments.

This was done to address the challenges posed by bad weather in the northern part of the country in the winter months, as well as to ensure breaks between games.

The BCCI also took into consideration the fact that last season’s Ranji Trophy was organized with games just three days apart, including travel, which did not give players enough time to rest and recover.

“There will be a longer break between matches to allow players enough time to recover and maintain peak performance throughout the season,” Shah informed the media on Saturday.

According to the proposal, the national season will begin with the Duleep Trophy, which will feature four teams to be chosen by the national selectors.

The Irani Cup will follow the Duleep Trophy, after which the Ranji Trophy will be held in two halves.

In the CK Nayudu Trophy, which will not feature a coin toss, the visiting team will have the right to decide whether to bat or bowl first.

“The CK Nayudu Trophy will implement a new points system that aims to promote balanced performances. This includes awarding points for batting and bowling performance in the first innings, as well as points for first innings lead or outright victory,” Shah said.

The Board will also evaluate the effectiveness of the new points system employed for the CK Nayudu Trophy at the end of the season and a decision will be taken if the same has to be implemented for the Ranji Trophy for the following season as well.

In women’s cricket, all inter-zonal tournaments, including one-day, T20 and multi-day competitions, will have the teams selected by the national selectors.
