IPL 2024 Playoffs Scenario: The Indian Premier League (IPL) 2024 on Thursday saw its third team qualify for the play-offs in SunRisers Hyderabad. The Pat Cummins-led side reached 15 points from 13 games after their match against Gujarat Titans was marred by rain in Hyderabad. This ensured that SRH would be in the top four along with Kolkata Knight Riders (19 points from 13 matches) and Rajasthan Royals (16 points from 13 matches). SRH still has a game against PBKS on Sunday.

With three places already secured, the fight is between three teams for the final place in the playoffs – Chennai Super Kings, Royal Challengers Bengaluru, Lucknow Super Giants. Of the three, the real fight is between CSK and RCB. LSG only has a mathematical chance of advancing in all practical senses.

Here are all the details of the scenario for the four teams after SRH bagged the third spot in the playoffs.

Chennai Super Kings (14 points from 13 matches, NRR +0.528)

Remaining matches – 1 (vs RCB)

The team led by Ruturaj Gaikwad is in the best position to clinch the fourth spot in the playoffs. A win over RCB on Saturday will guarantee progress. If RR and SRH lose their last matches against KKR and Punjab Kings respectively, CSK can also dream of a top two finish provided they have a better net run rate.

They can also advance even if they lose to RCB. To do this, the full-back must ensure that the margin of defeat is not large. This will see their NRR remain better than RCB and therefore finish above their rivals in the final points table.

Royal Challengers Bengaluru (12 points from 13 matches, NRR +0.387)

Remaining Games – 1 (vs CSK)

The team led by Faf du Plessis needs to win the last game to have a chance for the final spot in the playoffs. And not just win, they have to triumph by a considerable margin to ensure their run rate remains above CSK.

Lucknow Super Giants (12 points from 13 matches, NRR -0.787)

Remaining matches – 1 (vs MI)

The KL Rahul-led team faces an unlikely scenario. The only way they can qualify is by hoping to win the last match by a huge margin. Afterwards, RCB beat CSK but not by a big margin. This could make their NRR better than RCB and CSK. However, the scenario seems almost impossible.

Delhi Capitals (14 points from 14 matches, -0.377)

Remaining matches – 0

The team is out of playoff contention because they have no more games left. They don’t have any more games to improve.
