Australia have secured their final squad for the 2024 ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, confirming their 15-player group and traveling reserves. Although they will pick an unchanged group for the squad from their preliminary list, Jake Fraser-McGurk and Matt Short will accompany the squad as reserves. That means there is still no place for Steve Smith and the likes of Jason Behrendorff and Tanveer Sangha with the ball for the four-week tournament in the West Indies and USA.
Mitchell Marsh leads the team, with his promotion to full-time T20I confirmed by Australia alongside the original squad announcement on May 1.
Left-arm spinner Ashton Agar was called up despite not playing a T20I since the last T20 World Cup on Australian soil in 2022, while Marcus Stoinis, Tim David and Cameron Green joined Glenn Maxwell to make the final squad as all-round options.
Australian players and staff will arrive in the West Indies in stages, with those competing in the Indian Premier League given time at home before joining the group.
Australian chairman of selectors George Bailey said Fraser-McGurk and Short presented “compelling cases” for selection and provided better than adequate cover should team members be eliminated during the tournament.
“As the tournament progresses, the short gap between games makes it difficult to get players on short notice in case of injury,” Bailey said.
“Matt provides the team with a versatile skill set option, while Jake provides additional hitting coverage.”
“Both players have exciting talents that can be added to the squad if necessary. Otherwise, the experience will still be valuable in their respective development journeys at international level.”
Australia open their T20 World Cup campaign against Oman in Barbados on June 5, before Group B games against England, Namibia and Scotland.
