The Indian women’s hockey team continued its winning streak in the Belgian leg of the FIH Pro League, falling to a 0-3 defeat to Argentina on Sunday. Celina Di Santo (1st minute), Maria Campoy (39th) and Maria Granatto (47th) scored for Argentina in India’s last match in the Belgian match. Argentina advanced in the first minute, dissecting the high Indian pressure and penetrating the shooting area, where Di Santo deflected Granatto’s shot to score the first goal. As India struggled to break out of their own half, a period of Argentine dominance ensued, resulting in a penalty corner eight minutes into the game, but they were unable to extend their lead.

India started playing some passes and got into the game. They forced Argentine goalkeeper Clara Barberi into action after Udita’s low shot into the circle found Lalremsiami, who was unable to score from close range.

Argentina regained control of the game in the second quarter, winning a series of penalty corners, but an alert duo from Bichu Devi Kharibam and Salima Tete helped keep the ball out of the net.

A rare Indian foray into the shooting circle resulted in a penalty corner, but Deepika’s drag shot was comfortably avoided.

Argentina pressed hard for the rest of the quarter, but the Indian defense held firm to keep the score 0-1 in the second half.

India won a penalty corner early in the third quarter but failed to create a scoring opportunity.

Argentina opened the scoring in the 39th minute when Campoy collected the ball on the left wing and entered the circle, dodging some challenges and past Savita Punia to increase the lead.

India had a chance to score in the last minute of the quarter but Navneet Kaur’s lob was saved by Barberi.

Argentina won a penalty corner just as the final quarter began and Granatto directed Agustina Gorzelany’s shot past Savita into the goal to extend the lead.

Argentina increased the intensity after the goal and drew level with India, creating multiple chances through Granatto, but a resilient Indian defense managed to prevent any further advance.

The Indian women’s hockey team will face Germany in their next match in London on June 1.
