Hardik Pandya appeared over Roston Chase’s name in a hilarious blunder during Star Sports’ post-match coverage of the West Indies vs Papua New Guinea Group C game in the ICC T20 World Cup 2024. After Roston Chase smashed an unbeaten 42 to guide West Indies to victory, spectators were surprised to see the image of Hardik Pandya in place of the West Indies batsman. The mistake drew gleeful comments from fans on social media as the image went viral on X.

Many users took the opportunity to bring comparisons between Hardik Pandya’s similarity to the Caribbean lifestyle. In particular, a clip of Hardik’s brother Krunal comparing him to a West Indian went viral.

“If you see a photo of Hardik as a kid, you would think this kid is from the Caribbean, not an Indian kid,” jokes Krunal in the clip taken from the third season of the YouTube series ‘What The Duck’.

Hardik Pandya’s Caribbean resemblance was also commented on by Sourav Ganguly earlier in an episode of Breakfast With Champions on YouTube.

“I met Hardik Pandya the other day, he looked like he was born in Jamaica. He can’t be from Baroda!” the former India captain said at Pandya in a 2018 video.

The tweet also brought a welcome change to Hardik Pandya’s reception on social media, which has been increasingly negative since he replaced Rohit Sharma as captain of Mumbai Indians ahead of IPL 2024.

Having retained the vice-captaincy for the 2024 T20 World Cup, the onus is on Pandya to provide crucial balance to the Indian team. He played a brilliant 40 off 23 balls and took one wicket in India’s friendly against Bangladesh.

India will begin their quest for a second T20 World Cup title on June 5, taking on Ireland in New York.
