Rahul Dravid on Monday confirmed that the T20 World Cup will be his last tournament as coach of the Indian national cricket team. Dravid’s announcement was brought forward as he was not expected to reapply for the top job after the BCCI called for applications last month. Speaking to reporters ahead of India’s World Cup opener against Ireland, Dravid said that he has enjoyed his entire coaching tenure.
“Every tournament is important. Every game I coached for India was very important for me. So for me it will be no different just because it will be the last one I will be in charge of,” he said. when asked if this tournament had more importance because he was the last one in charge of the team.
The former India captain took charge of the team in November 2021 after that year’s T20 World Cup.
“I love doing the job. I’ve really enjoyed coaching India and I think it’s a truly special job to do. I’ve enjoyed working with this team and it’s a great group of kids to work with, but yeah, but just considering you know, Unfortunately, with exactly the type of schedules and where I am at in my life stage, I don’t think I will be able to apply again.
“So yes, it will obviously be my last, but having said that, it’s no different for me, to be very honest. From the first day I took office, I always felt that every game was important and every game mattered and that’s not going to change,” he said.
India will aim to win an elusive ICC trophy here and provide a perfect send-off for their coach.
