Uganda claimed their first T20 World Cup win with a three-wicket win over Papua New Guinea at the Providence Stadium on Wednesday in a tense but low-scoring game. The African side bowled out PNG for 77 and after fighting back 26-5 in reply reached the target in 18.2 overs with Riazat Ali Shah top-scoring with 33. Riazat formed a crucial sixth-wicket partnership of 35 with Juma Miyagi ( 13) which effectively won the game for the tournament newcomers.

But PNG will rue the moment when eight-year-old Riazat was run out by Charles Amini, who misjudged a relatively simple catch.

The Pacific Islanders had their work cut out trying to defend such a low total, but they were also defeated in part by some loose shots, conceding 15 wides.

After that break, Riazat played a disciplined and focused inning until, with just three to go, he skied to John Kariko at third man.

Ugandans celebrated their victory by dancing on the edge of the pitch as the team, who defeated cricket’s most established country, Zimbabwe, to reach the tournament, picked up their first points.

“This is a very special victory for us. You know, the first World Cup victory,” said Uganda captain Brian Masaba.

“It doesn’t get more special than that. I’m really proud of this group of guys. I mean, they worked, they made a big change. And to get a win for your country in the World Cup is very, very special,” he added.

Masaba won the toss and put Papua New Guinea in to bat and was rewarded when Alpesh Ramjani removed PNG captain Assad Vala with the second ball of the innings, trapping him lbw in what was a maiden opening.

Sese Bau tried to guide Juma Miyagi, but was caught by Roger Mukasa, who did well to come back and collect the ball halfway.

Tony Ura did the same as his attempt to send off Cosmas Kyewuta turned into a simple catch for Mukasa midway through the game, leaving his team struggling at 19-3 heading into the final quarter.

Lega Siaka looked confident making 12 off 17 balls before a reckless attempt to make a second run ended in a run-out and when Charles Amini was bowled by Frank Nsubuga it was damage limitation time.

But only Hiri Hiri (15) and Kiplin Doriga (12) managed to make double figures as the Pacific Islanders were bowled out with five balls remaining of the allotted 20 overs.
