Newcomers USA stunned former champions Pakistan via Super Over, causing the first major upset of the ongoing T20 World Cup on Thursday.

Asked to bat first, Pakistan scored 159 for seven in the allotted 20 overs. The USA produced a fine show and finished on 159 for three.

In the Super Over, USA hit 18 runs and lost one wicket and Pakistan managed just 13 for one.

The result is reminiscent of Pakistan’s shocking defeat to Ireland in the 2007 ODI World Cup.

Ireland were then playing in their first World Cup.

Captain Monank Patel hit 50 off 38 balls and Andries Gous contributed 35 off 26 balls. Aaron Jones, the hero of the USA’s tournament-opening victory over Canada, was not out with 36 off 26 balls.

Earlier, captain Babar Azam top scored for Pakistan with 44 while Shadab Khan scored 40.

For the USA, Nosthush Kenjige was the pick of the bowlers, taking three wickets for 30 runs.

The USA started the campaign with a victory over Canada, and the victory on Thursday not only boosted their position in the table, but also helped them write history.
