Indian national cricket team’s legendary batsman Virender Sehwag gave a brutal verdict on Shakib Al Hasan after Bangladesh crashed out and lost to South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup on Monday. Chasing a modest target of 114, Bangladesh looked to be in control before completely losing the plot as Najmul Hossain Shanto-le’s side lost the match by 4 runs. Shakib managed to last just 4 balls as he was dismissed by Anrich Nortje after scoring just 3. Sehwag said that Shakib should have retired from the T20 format a long time ago and even insisted that his numbers in the shortest format of the game have been ‘disgraceful’ lately.

“During the last World Cup, I thought he shouldn’t be picked for the T20 format anymore. The time for retirement came a long time ago. your recent numbers. You should come forward and announce that enough is enough, I am retiring from this format,” Sehwag said on Twitter. Cricbuzz.

Sehwag said Shakib is “not Adam Gilchrist or Matthew Hayden” who he can rely on when playing the pull shot and advised him to style his game accordingly.

“If you are chosen for the World Cup squad for your experience, then show that it was really worth it. You need to spend some time at least. You are not Adam Gilchrist or Mathew Hayden. Hooks and pulls are not your strong points You is a Bangladeshi player. You play to your strength.”

Bangladesh currently have 2 points from 2 games after their defeat against South Africa.

“We were a little nervous but confident that we could get over the line, but unfortunately that didn’t happen. (Tanzim Hasan) He has worked really hard over the last few days, we wanted wickets with the new ball and he showed character today. the match we should have won, in the last overs they played really well. This can happen in cricket.

“(Rishad) He is very good, the way we have bowled in the last few series, he has practiced a lot. We have struggled with leg-spinners for the last 10-15 years so we were lucky to have one. I hope he can continue. Thanks everyone the supporters, I hope they come to the West Indies too,” said Shanto.
