“A very, very sad day in Pakistan cricket,” was how Pakistani legend Wasim Akram labeled the country’s defeat to India in the 2024 T20 World Cup. Rewatching the game on his own X account, Akram posted a video asking immediate changes in the current unity of Pakistan. The Babar Azam-led side slumped to a six-run defeat despite being in control of the chase, with India pacesetter Jasprit Bumrah taking three wickets. Akram blasted the performance and requested PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi for changes in the side.

“Enough is enough. We need changes now. Enough of you. Bring a new team, bring 6-7 new players. If we lose, we will lose with them,” Akram said angrily.

“We need new players and we need to support them so that a team of the future can be formed that can fight,” he said.

Akram criticized the Pakistan players for losing the match in a winning scenario, on a pitch that was better for the batsmen than the score suggested.

“The captain and coach can’t teach you situational awareness and how to chase! How long can they be spoon-fed?” boomed Akram.

Pakistan batsman Mohammad Rizwan came out trying to hit Jasprit Bumrah, scoring 31 off 44 balls.

“I ask the PCB president to take some bold decisions. All we hear is this player is angry and that player is angry,” Akram said in frustration.

“The players themselves should go to the PCB president and ask for a break,” he added.

Following the defeat to India that left Pakistan on the brink of elimination from the 2024 T20 World Cup, PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi also signaled imminent changes.

“The team needs major surgery,” Naqvi commented after the defeat in India.

Despite the win against Canada, Pakistan’s hopes of qualifying lie with either India or the US losing games.
