India entered the Super 8 stage of the 2024 T20 World Cup with a comfortable victory over the USA in their previous Group A match on Wednesday in New York. Opting to bowl first, Team India had a memorable match as they restricted the co-hosts to 110/8 in 20 overs. Pacer Arshdeep Singh was the main architect of India’s performance as he scalped four wickets. later, Rohit Sharma and company crossed the line in 18.2 overs with Suryakumar Yadav (50*) and Shivam Dube (31*) stitching together an unbeaten 72-run partnership.

Apart from delivering a decisive blow for India, Surya also won many hearts with his post-match gesture to USA’s stand-in captain Aaron Jones.

After the match ended, Jones, who was leading the team in the absence of his regular captain Monank Patel, was visibly disappointed that the USA could not make it three wins in a row.

However, Surya came and hugged Jones and consoled him. The US batsman also appreciated the gesture and shook his hand.

Despite being on the losing side, Jones was pleased with his team’s bowling effort as they made India work hard for every run.

“10-15 runs less. If we had 130 it would have been a tough total, that’s how it is sometimes. The boys were very disciplined, very proud of the bowling unit,” Jones said during the post-match presentation.

Jones mentioned it’s time to restructure and said they will hold a few meetings before facing Ireland at the Central Broward Regional Park Stadium Turf Ground in Florida on Friday.

“It’s a good feeling, that’s what we wanted for US cricket, to enjoy. Let’s recalibrate now, have some meetings and come back strong,” she added.

The 29-year-old batsman said the pitch in New York was a bit tricky and more suitable for bowling. He also provided a big update on captain Monank Patel.

“The wicket was a bit tricky, more suitable for bowling. That’s why there is no spin. Mainly he (Monank Patel) should have been fit for the last game, he just had a small problem,” he added.
