Former Pakistan captain Wasim Akram has praised the United States of America (USA) after the T20 World Cup debutants qualified for the Super 8 stage of the tournament. After the rainy stalemate against Ireland, the USA built on victories over Canada and former T20 World Cup champions Pakistan to qualify for the next round. The only problem in their campaign came at the hands of India, but they also fought hard against Rohit Sharma and co. before descending.
Speaking in a video shared by ICC, Akram said the US deserves to be in the next round, especially after defeating Pakistan.
“Yes, absolutely. And congratulations to the US team. They did incredibly well when you talk about the globalization of the game. It’s the US qualifying for the Super Eights,” Akram said in a video shared by ICC’s Instagram.
Akram, however, criticized the Pakistan team, saying that while the US advances to the next stage, Babar Azam and co. I will board a flight to Dubai before returning home
“They deserve to be there. They beat Pakistan in the round. So they are there. And for Pakistan the plan was EK 601 to Dubai and then to the respective cities. And then we will see what happens from there,” Akram added.
The USA advanced to the Super Eights stage of the T20 World Cup on Friday when the match against Ireland was abandoned, a result which meant the elimination of former champions Pakistan.
The field team spent hours working to dry the wet outfield at Lauderhill, but soon after the umpires inspected the conditions, a heavy downpour ended any hopes, with the field quickly submerged once again.
A place in the round of 16 also means the USA have automatically qualified for the 2026 World Cup.
