Indian boxer Lovlina Borgohain, an Olympic medalist, secured a silver medal in the 2024 Grand Prix competition held in the Czech Republic. On the last day of competition, Saturday, Lovlina lost 2-3 in the third fight against Li Qian, from China. The competition was held in a round-robin format from June 12 to 15. Lovlina won her first fight 3-2 against England’s Chantal Reid, but lost her second 0-5 against Cindy Ngamba, from the refugee Olympic team. Lovlina will be one of the boxers who will represent the country at the Paris 2024 Olympics, which will be held from July 26th to August 11th.
She won the bronze medal at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics in the welterweight category.
India won six quotas in boxing for Paris 2024 Olympics with Amit Panghal (51kg), Nishant Dev (71kg), Nikhat Zareen (50kg), Preeti Pawar (54kg), Jaismine Lamboria (57kg), Lovlina Borgohain (75kg) in different categories.
Tokyo 2020 bronze medalist Lovlina Borgohain (women’s 75kg), two-time world champion Nikhat Zareen (women’s 50kg) and Preeti Pawar (women’s 54kg) won their respective quotas at the Hangzhou Asian Games last year.
The rest of India’s three quotas came during the World Boxing Qualifiers event in June. Amit, Nishant and Jaismine won the quarter-final fights in their respective weight categories to get the quota.
At the Olympics, India will aim to surpass its all-time best record of seven medals, including a gold won at the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. At the Paralympics, India will aim to surpass its best-ever record of 19 medals, including five gold, won in the 2020 edition in Tokyo.
