The 2024 T20 World Cup witnessed a major upset as the Pakistan cricket team was eliminated from the competition after the encounter between the United States and Ireland was abandoned due to rain. The Babar Azam-led team suffered a shock defeat against the United States before being defeated by traditional rivals India in a thriller. Although Pakistan ended up defeating Canada in the third group stage match, it was not enough as the abandoned match resulted in elimination. Former Indian cricketer Wasim Jaffer took to social media to criticize Babar Azam and Co after his exit.

“Contrary to popular belief, Pakistan was not eliminated because it rained US vs IRE. They were eliminated because Pakistan lost to the US,” he posted on X (formerly Twitter).

Due to two consecutive defeats, Pakistan needed to win the remaining two matches, while the United States had to lose both matches for Babar Azam and company to qualify. Even in this scenario, qualification would have been decided by Net Run Rate (NRR).

However, with the points being shared between the United States and Ireland due to the match being abandoned due to rain, Pakistan were eliminated from the tournament with one match remaining.

The PCB is now preparing for a major shake-up and review of the team’s performance and is expected to take important decisions in the coming days.

PCB chairman Mohsin Naqvi said major surgery is needed on the team, hinting at an expected cancellation of central contracts of players including captain Babar Azam and other senior players.
