New Zealand fast bowler Lockie Ferguson praised the bowling conditions at the Brian Lara Stadium following his historic 4-4-0-3 spell against Papua New Guinea in the T20 World Cup amid the disappointment of an early exit from the T20 World Cup. Ferguson’s performance was simply magical as he recorded the most economical bowling figures in the history of the ICC T20 World Cup and became only the second bowler in T20Is to bowl 24 balls without conceding a run.

His sensational spell was instrumental in restricting PNG to just 78 runs, with every New Zealand player contributing to taking wickets.

Reflecting on the match, Ferguson appreciated the challenging nature of the wicket. “Yes, no, no runs today. But yes, look, obviously a difficult wicket to bat on. Coming from the IPL where there were a lot of runs being scored, it’s good to have a wicket like that for a change,” he said in a video posted by the TPI on its social networks.

The player acknowledged that these days are rare and appreciated the opportunity to explore the conditions. “It was just one of those days. You got to see it when our boys took part as well. So I think from a bowling point of view, it’s good to be able to bowl on wickets like that. But I can’t imagine it happening very often.”

Despite his personal success, Ferguson was vocal about the team’s premature exit from the tournament. He expressed his disappointment while praising his teammate Trent Boult, who played his last match in the T20 World Cup.

“Look, I love playing for New Zealand. I’m very disappointed that we got knocked out like that. But at the same time, I really enjoyed playing with that group of guys. Obviously Boulty (Trent Boult) with his last game today. It will be It’s sad not to have him in the group, but it’s been an incredible career and it’s certainly been good to accompany him to every game, so I wish him all the best,” he said.

Ferguson’s sentiments reflected a bittersweet moment for the team as they said goodbye to New Zealand cricket stalwart Boult. “It’s difficult. Now we are parting ways as a team for a few months. So naturally you will miss your good friends and look forward to returning to base at the end of the year,” he said.

New Zealand easily chased down the modest target set by PNG, reaching 79-3 in 13 overs.
