England captain Jos Buttler got his team’s 2024 T20 World Cup campaign back on track with a victory over the West Indies on Wednesday. England, whose campaign was winding down thanks to some poor results and rain-marred matches in the group stage of the tournament, looked to be at their best again when facing England. On the way to England’s victory, captain Buttler overtook Pakistan’s Mohammad Rizwan as the ‘designated wicket-taker’ with the most runs in T20I history. Buttler scored 22 balls (25) in the match and took his tally to 2,967 runs in T20 international cricket. He averages 37.55 in the format, with a strike of 146.30.

Mohammad Rizwan, on the other hand, has 2,952 runs to his name as the designated wicketkeeper. No other player in the world has scored more than 2,500 runs as a designated keeper.

In a game against West Indies, Philip Salt and Jonny Bairstow receive plaudits for their influence and unbeaten record, Buttler praised the veteran spinner for his economical spell.

Most bowlers conceded runs at an economy of over eight, and Rashid conceded runs at just 5.20.

In his spell of four overs, Rashid gave away just 21 runs and took the prized wicket of dangerous batsman Andre Russell.

“He’s been like this all along. He’s our most important player. He has so many variations and restricts runs,” Buttler said in the post-match presentation.

West Indies managed to land two quick blows by removing Buttler and Moeen Ali. Bairstow and Salt calmed the nerves with their composure and innovative shots.

After Salt raised his bat for fifty, he went wild, hitting 30 runs off Romário Shepherd’s over to completely eliminate West Indies’ chances of winning the game.

The unbeaten 97-run knock took the game away from the West Indies and took England one step closer to victory.

“The Bairstow-Salt partnership was very good. Jonny took the game deep and Salty broke late. Jonny batted at No. 4 today, a classy player for a long time. You continue to support classy players. Incredible, mature, innings of senior players. People say you learn when you lose, but you also learn when you win. It’s important to put that aside and focus now,” Buttler noted.
