The Afghanistan vs Bangladesh T20 Super 8 World Cup game was widely followed, with the former creating history with its first semi-final appearance. Afghanistan needed to beat Bangladesh to be the second Super 8 Group 1 team after India to enter the last four stages. The Rashid Khan-led team did just that, maintaining their composure in a rain-affected, low-scoring match to eliminate Bangladesh and Australia in the semi-final race.

The Afghanistan v Bangladesh match also had a controversial moment when Gulbadin Naib allegedly faked injury after coach Jonathan Trott apparently sent signs of slowing down. Afghanistan were ahead of DLS with rain interrupting the match at that time. Naib immediately fell to the ground. The act was criticized on social media, with few accusing Afghanistan of “cheating”.

Commenting on the incident, Indian cricketer R Ashwin wrote on X: “Red card for Gulbadin Naib.” To which the Afghanistan player replied: “Kabi khushi kabi gham main huta hai Hamstring”

Afghanistan captain Rashid Khan sought to downplay the incident.

“Well, he had some cramps, I don’t know what happened to him and I don’t know what’s going on on social media, but that doesn’t matter – it’s just the final pitch injury coming up and then we don’t have it. we lost any balance, the rain came and we just left, it’s not something that made a big difference in the game”, Rashid Khan.

“We got back on the field after five minutes and there wasn’t a big difference. For me, it’s like a little injury happened, so you need some time.”
