Australia have been eliminated from the 2024 T20 World Cup following Afghanistan’s thrilling victory over Bangladesh in their final Super 8 match on Tuesday. Mitchell Marsh’s side suffered a shock defeat against Afghanistan before losing to India – a result that virtually eliminated them from the tournament. The 24-run victory for India was a huge result for their fans, who hailed it as “revenge” for their defeat in the 2023 Cricket World Cup final in Ahmedabad. During the match between India and Australia, Australia’s ODI team captain Pat Cummins also faced a fan’s sledging while returning to the pavilion after his dismissal. “Hey Pat! This is for 2023, this is revenge for 2023, remember Ahmedabad? And you’re going home tomorrow,” the fan was heard shouting. Video of the incident surfaced online and went viral on social media.

Coming into the match, Rohit Sharma hit a brilliant 92 to guide India to a huge total of 205 for the loss of 5 wickets. In response, Travis Head was once again Australia’s leading run-scorer, but Arshdeep Singh took three wickets while Kuldeep Yadav took two to guide his team to a comprehensive victory.

“Satisfactory. We know the opponents and the threat they bring. As a team we did well, we kept doing the things we needed to do. It gives us good confidence as a team. 200 is a good result, but when you’re playing here with the wind being a big factor, anything can happen.”

“But I think we were used to the conditions pretty well, and it was about individuals doing their jobs. In New York there were sailor-friendly wickets.”

“He had to stay out, but we knew he had a big role to play here. (In the semi-final) We don’t want to do anything different, play the same way and understand what each one has to do. and not think too much about what lies ahead. Don’t think about your opponent. We’ve been doing it consistently, we just need to keep going (about playing England in the semi). It will be a beautiful match, nothing changes for us as a team. ” Rohit said after the match.
