Classy Indian batsman Virat Kohli shared a heartfelt note for his wife and Bollywood actress Anushka Sharma a day after defeating South Africa in a seven-run final thriller to win the 2024 T20 World Cup and end the wait of 11 years for the ICC title at Kensington Oval, Barbados. India went into title contention on Saturday as one of two unbeaten teams alongside South Africa. Man of the match Virat Kohli stood out when it mattered most with a 59-ball 76 to help India register a competitive 176/7, the highest total in a men’s T20 World Cup final. His 72 runs represented a fourth wicket with Axar Patel, who took 47 off 31 balls, and a 57-run partnership with Shivam Dube, who took 16 off 27 balls.
Sharing a post on ‘Instagram’ with a photo of his wife, Virat wrote, “None of this would be remotely possible without you, my love. no longer be grateful for you. This victory is as much yours as it is mine. Thank you and I love you for being YOU @anushkasharma.
In response, South Africa were well in sight to chase the total. But Hardik’s run out of Heinrich Klaasen propelled India back into the match and emerged victorious, ending an 11-year global trophy drought by restricting South Africa to 169/8. While Pandya took 3-20, Player of the Tournament Jasprit Bumrah shone with 2-18.
After delivering a decisive blow to his team, Kohli also announced his retirement from the T20I format of the game, ending his T20I career as India’s second highest run-scorer in the format with 4,188 runs in 125 matches at an average of 48.69 and strike rate of 137.04.
