The Indian team’s triumph in the T20 World Cup last week was nothing short of a fairytale for the two defenders of the game – Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma. The seven-run victory over South Africa in the summit clash proved to be the perfect send-off for Kohli and Rohit, with the two announcing their retirements from T20I after the match. While Kohli made the announcement soon after the final, Rohit did the same during the post-match press conference. Kohli was named ‘Man of the Match’ in the final, while Rohit became the first Indian captain in 11 years to win the ICC title.

Both Kohli and Rohit were emotional after the final when the two hugged each other on the ground. The two also shared a moment on the stairs leading to the Indian dressing room.

An unseen video of outgoing coach Rahul Dravid’s reaction to seeing Rohit and Kohli hugging on the stairs has gone viral. Dravid was coming down from the dressing room when the two hugged. The 50-year-old patted himself on the back before taking the field.

On Rohit and Kohli’s T20I retirements, Indian pacer Mohammed Shami expressed his shock, saying filling their places in the team will be a difficult task.

“The retirement of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli from T20Is came as a shock. They have been faithful to India, delivering outstanding performances for the country for 15-16 years and earning their titles as kings of white-ball cricket. The retirement of both simultaneously It’s shocking, but it’s part of the natural cycle – when one player leaves, another joins. However, replacing these stars in the team will be a significant challenge,” said Shami.

“Walking goodbye to a journey after achieving your goal is a truly emotional moment. I would like to thank Rohit and Virat for winning matches for the team, playing incredible innings for India and breaking records along the way,” he added.
