Suryakumar Yadav in action for India against South Africa in the 2024 T20 World Cup Final©AFP
The Indian cricket team created history in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2024 when the Rohit Sharma-led team became the first team to win the competition without losing a single game. India produced a series of brilliant performances and ultimately defeated South Africa in a thrilling final to lift the T20 World Cup trophy after 17 years. While India’s performance was universally praised, some doubts were raised about Suryakumar Yadav’s athletic catch to dismiss David Miller in the final over of the match. Several videos on social media claimed that he actually touched the boundary line with his leg while completing the catch and such claims were even reported in some foreign media outlets. Indian cricket team’s legendary batsman Sunil Gavaskar was unhappy with the accusation and criticized an Australian newspaper for making such claims after India’s victory in the competition.
“There was also a question raised in an Australian newspaper about the fairness of the catch that Suryakumar Yadav took to dismiss David Miller in the final over. All the replays made it clear that SKY had done a wonderful balancing act when he took the catch and hit the ball at air before crossing the boundary rope and then jumped into the air and caught the ball inside the boundary to complete a fabulous catch,” Gavaskar wrote in his column for Sports star.
Gavaskar further said Australian journalists should investigate allegations of cheating against their own team before commenting on other sides of world cricket.
“Nobody questioned the capture, but the writer of the article did. He might be interested in seeing the video circulated for the 10 most egregious acts of cheating committed by Australians before trying to point the finger at SKY. Pot calling the kettle black, of fact,” the legendary Indian batsman added.
