Defending champion Carlos Alcaraz shrugged off a first-set defeat to beat Tommy Paul on Tuesday and repeat his Wimbledon semi-final with Daniil Medvedev. The Spanish world number three, seeking a fourth Grand Slam title, defeated his 12th-ranked opponent 5-7, 6-4, 6-2, 6-2 under the roof of court number 1. Alcaraz was slow to leave of blocks, being broken twice by the in-form American in the 72-minute first set. Paul took a two-game lead in the second set when Alcaraz again faltered on serve, but the Spaniard came back to level and broke again to level the match.

Three breaks in the third set put the world number three in command and he accelerated further in the fourth set, winning 92 percent of first serve points and making just four unforced errors.

Alcaraz, who is seeking to become the sixth man to win back-to-back French Open and Wimbledon titles, said it was a tough start to the quarterfinals against the recent champion at Queen’s.

“If I’m struggling a little bit to find the solutions, if the opponent is playing great tennis and I don’t put them in trouble, I believe that in the end I can come back and find solutions,” he said.

Looking forward to his match against Russian fifth seed Medvedev, who he defeated last year on his way to winning his first Wimbledon title, he said: “I hope to get the same result.

“He just beat Jannik Sinner, the best player at the moment, so I know he’s in very good form, so I have to play my best, I have to believe in myself and try to continue if I want to beat him.”
