Liverpool star Darwin Nunez and other Uruguayan players were involved in a fight with Colombian fans that broke out after Wednesday’s 1-0 Copa América semi-final defeat. Television footage showed Uruguayan striker Nunez throwing a series of punches at Colombian fans after jumping into the spectators’ seat at Charlotte’s Bank of America Stadium following a bad-tempered defeat to Colombia. Uruguayan central defender José Maria Gimenez said the players entered the chaos out of concern for the safety of family and loved ones watching the game.

Watch the incident here:

“This is a disaster. Our family was in danger. We had to go to the stands to remove our loved ones, with newborn babies,” said the Atlético de Madrid player.

“There wasn’t a single police officer…I hope whoever is organizing this is a little more careful with the families.

“In every game this happens because there are people who don’t know how to handle a few drinks.”

The overwhelming majority of spectators in the crowd supported Colombia, but there was no segregation between them and their Uruguayan counterparts.

As punches were thrown, several Uruguayan players rose into the crowd, apparently to protect them, with Nunez standing out among them.

The fight continued for several minutes until the police finally intervened.

A group of around 80 to 100 Uruguayan fans remained in the stadium, on the field, long after the rest of the fans had left.

Ugly scenes also erupted on the pitch after the final whistle, with players and staff from both teams involved in mass confusion in the center circle following Colombia’s victory.
