After appointing Gautam Gambhir as the head coach of the Indian team, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) is now lining up its option to decide the rest of the support team. Over the past few days, several names have been linked with the post of bowling coach, including Zaheer Khan, Lakshmipathy Balaji and R Vinay Kumar. Although a final decision has not yet been made, Cricbuzz has now reported that Gambhir has asked the BCCI to also consider former South Africa man Morne Morkel for the role.
The report also stated that the BCCI has already held talks with Morkel, who played 86 Tests, 117 ODIs and 44 T20Is for the Proteas. Morkel was Pakistan’s bowling coach during last year’s ODI World Cup in India but resigned from the role before his contract expired.
Gambhir and Morkel were part of Andy Flower’s support team at Lucknow Super Giants (LSG) for two seasons. While Gambhir left LSG to join KKR as a mentor, Morkel decided to remain at LSG under new coach Justin Langer.
Gambhir was KKR’s captain when Morkel joined the franchise in 2014. The former India opener has always been a big fan of Morkel, who he has often described as the “ferocious bowler he has ever faced”.
“Although a final decision has not yet been made, it appears that the BCCI may soon reach a conclusion. One of the considerations is Morkel’s young family and the extensive travel required for work in India. He lives in the upscale suburb of Seaforth , in North Sydney with his wife Roz Kelly, a Channel 9 sports presenter. The couple have two children,” the report stated.
If the BCCI and Morkel are able to reach an agreement, the former South African pacer will replace Paras Mhambrey, who has been part of Rahul Dravid’s support team for the last three years.
If reports are to be believed, Morkel could join former KKR teammate Ryan ten Doeschate and Nayar in Gambhir’s support team.
The BCCI is committed to retaining T Dilip from the outgoing Dravid regime.
