Veteran Indian spinner Amit Mishra addressed some of the most controversial topics in Indian cricket during a podcast chat. While talking about the KL Rahul-Sanjeev Goenka incident in the Virat Kohli-Gautam Gambhir dispute, Mishra shed light on some much talked about topics in sports. He also shared his views on Shubman Gill’s elevation as India’s captain, for the recently concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe, saying he doesn’t think the opening batsman should have been given the responsibility. For Mishra, Ruturaj Gaikwad remains a better option in all aspects, even as a batsman.

During a chat on Shubhankar Mishra’s YouTube podcast, Mishra did not hesitate to suggest that he would not have named Gill India T20 captain for the Zimbabwe series. The veteran spinner admitted that the decision was surprising.

Mai Shubman ko captain nahi banaunga, kyonki maine usey IPL me dekha, he doesn’t know ki captaincy kaise karna hai, uske paas captaincy ka idea hi nahi hai. (I wouldn’t have made him captain. You saw the IPL this season, Gill doesn’t know how to captain the team, he’s clueless),” he said on the show.

“Just because he is part of the Indian team, he should not be named captain. Gill has done well in the IPL over the last few seasons, he has done well in the Indian team as well. captain as they want to give him the leadership experience, which was not visible when he led the Gujarat Titans in the IPL,” he added.

Talking about the captaincy options in the shortest format, Mishra mentioned the names of Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant and Ruturaj Gaikwad as some of the other options. While Gaikwad was part of Zimbabwe’s T20Is series from the beginning, Samson joined the team in the second match.

“There are Sanju Samson, Rishabh Pant, Ruturaj Gaikwad who can lead India in T20Is. Right now, the BCCI is just looking to evaluate all options,” he said when asked why Gill was elevated to the leadership role.

Everyone favors someone

“Everyone likes it,” Mishra said when asked if Rahul Dravid’s ‘favouritism’ won him the India captaincy. “I don’t hate Shubman Gill, I like him too. But I feel Ruturaj is a better option because he has scored runs in tougher situations, be it in the Chennai Super Kings or during the Asian Games. he should be kept with the team, just like Yashasvi Jaiswal was with the Indian team in the T20 World Cup.”

“He is someone who can deliver in T20Is, ODIs and Tests. The most important thing is who brings calm to the team? he explained further.
