India’s newly crowned T20I captain Suryakumar Yadav was given the responsibility of leading the team on Thursday. While it looked like Hardik Pandya would get the role, having been vice-captain of the Indian team under Rohit Sharma for a long time, the all-rounder’s repeated fitness issues prompted the selection committee of the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) looking for an alternative. After Surya was named captain of the team in the shortest format, an old video of him surfaced on social media in which the new ‘captain’ could be seen talking about his mindset as a leader.

Star Sports shared the clip on social media, in which Suryakumar spoke about his captaincy at Matra. The video is from 2023, when Surya led the Indian team to a 4-1 victory over Australia and then a 1-1 draw against South Africa in the shortest format.

“I’m really enjoying this new role, enjoying spending time with everyone and we all play together a lot, whether it’s franchise cricket or state cricket, so it’s not that difficult to understand their strengths and weaknesses. so long that the relationship we have on the field has become very good,” he said in the video.

“It’s important for me to keep things simple, I’m a process oriented man, I like to keep things simple and that’s what I try and I tell everyone try to keep things really simple, don’t try to be a different version of yourself “, he added.

Shubman Gill, who led the Men in Blue in the recently concluded T20I series against Zimbabwe, will be Suryakumar Yadav’s deputy in the upcoming three-match 20-over series against Sri Lanka.

Meanwhile, star Indian all-rounder Hardik Pandya, who last led the team, was not given the responsibility of leading the team.

Pacers Arshdeep Singh, Mohammed Siraj and wicketkeeper-batsman Rishabh Pant have also been named in the T20I squad after being rested for India’s tour to Zimbabwe.

India’s tour of Sri Lanka will begin from July 27. The tour will begin with a three-match T20I series, followed by a three-match ODI series, which will begin on August 1.
