Shubman Gill is one of the best and most complete hitters in world cricket. Having made his India debut five years ago, he has become a crucial member of the team’s batting unit. However, it’s not just the batting that impresses Gill. The 24-year-old’s potential as captain and ability to deal with pressure also won him plaudits. Gill is the captain of the IPL franchise Gujarat Titans, while he also led a young Indian team to a 4-1 victory in the recently concluded T20I series against Zimabwe.

After the Zimbabwe series, Gill was named vice-captain of the Indian cricket team for their next tour to Sri Lanka. India will play three T20Is and the same number of ODIs on the tour.

Former India batting coach Vikram Rathour believes that one day Gill will lead the Indian team across all formats.

“Whatever saw him, be it for the Gujarat Titans or in Zimbabwe (when Gill led a T20 series), he did a good job. Now, with the vice-captaincy, the BCCI has given him additional responsibilities and I am sure he will be successful in this role,” Rathour said. The Indian Express.

“I feel the captaincy has brought the best out of Virat and Rohit and I feel it will do the same with Shubman. Although he is not yet the captain, being in the leadership group will also bring out the best in him. I’m very sure. When you are in that role, leading others, it gives you extra responsibility, which is good and I think it’s great for a kid like Shubman who could one day lead India in all three formats,” says Rathour.
