Simone Biles has already set all kinds of records and achieved a number of firsts in the sport of gymnastics, and she’s not done yet. The International Gymnastics Federation announced on July 26, she introduced a new skill on the uneven bars, a Weiler 1.5, in which Biles goes from a kip to a handstand and then turns 540 degrees, or a turn and a half. If she performs this skill at any point during her Olympic competition – through the qualifying round, team event, all-around, or individual event if she qualifies for them – then she will be named after it. This would give Biles ability in all four events. She already has two moves named after her on vault, two on floor and one on beam. The clean sweep would already cement it even more indelible legacy in gymnastics.

Other gymnasts, including all-around competitor Rebeca Andrade of Brazil, also showcased skills that could bear their name if they performed them successfully in Paris. Biles’ teammate Suni Lee, the reigning Olympic all-around champion, could also debut a skill on the uneven bars, her coach says, but it’s not likely during qualifying, team or all-around events if it would jeopardize the team’s overall score. . “It will be the team first,” said their coach Jess Graba after the gymnasts’ first training session at the Bercy Arena, on July 25, where the competition will be held.
