NNot even torrential rain could dampen the mood as thousands of athletes and spectators gathered in Paris to kick off the Opening Ceremony of the 2024 Summer Olympics on Friday. The spectacle was the first Olympic ceremony held outside a stadium and featured several tributes to French culture and performances by Lady Gaga and the French singer born in Mali, Aya Nakamura.
The opening ceremony, which was expected to be the biggest of the Olympics The story, in both geographic coverage and spectator numbers, began with a cloud of blue, white and red smoke before each delegation began floating along the River Seine, waving flags to the crowds gathered around the riverbank. An estimated 10,500 athletes floated along a four-mile course in nearly 100 boats, passing several Olympic venues along the way, including La Concorde Urban Park and the Grand Palais. More than 300,000 spectators were able to watch the ceremony on the banks of the Seine, with giant screens installed throughout the city for Paris viewers.
The route will end in front of the Trocadero – the esplanade in front of the Eiffel Tower where the Olympic cauldron will be lit and the Games will officially begin.
