Indian shooter Arjun Babuta bowed to pressure and finished fourth in the men’s 10m air rifle competition after almost winning a medal in his first Olympics on Monday. Babuta scored a total of 208.4. A 9.5 in response to Croatian Miran Maricic’s 10.7 ended his hopes of a podium finish. Babuta, 25 years old, started the final with 10.7 and continued with 10.2. A third shot of 10.5 took him to fourth place, while a 10.4 on his fourth attempt took him to third place. He finished the first series with a solid 10.6. He started the second series with a 10.7, followed it up with a 10.5 and shot a near-perfect 10.8 on the second shot of the first elimination series.
That effort propelled him to second place, while also reducing the gap between him and the world record holder, China’s Sheng Lihao, to 0.1 point.
However, he was unable to maintain his form and lost his medal.
Lihao took top honors in this event with an Olympic record of 252.2. Swede Victor Lindgren won the silver medal with 251.4 points, followed by Croatian Miran Maricic (230) in third place.
