Months have passed since the 2024 Indian Premier League (IPL) season ended, but there is still no confirmation on MS Dhoni’s future with the Chennai Super Kings. Dhoni stepped down as captain of the franchise before the start of this year’s season, paving the way for Ruturaj Gaikwad to lead the team. Although CSK did not qualify for the playoffs, there were many positive aspects of Ruturaj’s leadership. But does this mean it’s all over for Dhoni as a player? According to reports, Thala’s continuation in the league depends solely on the retention decision taken by the IPL administration and the BCCI.

With a mega auction scheduled to be held before the start of the IPL 2025 season, there is not much clarity on the number of players the BCCI will allow franchises to retain. According to a report in CricbuzzDhoni’s continuation in the league as a player is only possible if the BCCI allows retention of 5-6 players in each franchise.

Currently, the players most likely to be retained by the Super Kings include captain Ruturaj Gaikwad, Ravindra Jadeja, Matheesha Pathirana and Shivam Dube, although the retention order could be cautious.

Earlier, it was reported that IPL chiefs had invited franchise owners to a meeting on July 31 where the issue of retention would be discussed.

IPL CEO Hemang Amin reportedly texted the franchise owners for the meeting, although the timing and location were not confirmed at that time.

“Amin also indicated that the meeting would take place in the late afternoon or evening of July 31. All owners are believed to have confirmed their availability for the meeting,” a report said.

“While the exact venue has not been confirmed, the congregation is expected to take place at the Cricket Centre, the headquarters of the BCCI, located in the Wankhede Stadium complex in Mumbai,” he added.

The report also stated that retention of 5-6 players could be allowed by the BCCI.
