Later on Friday, India’s Lakshya Sen made history at the Paris Olympics by becoming the country’s first male shuttler to reach the semi-finals in the men’s singles badminton competition on Friday.
Although PV Sindhu won two medals at the Olympic Games and Saina Nehwal won bronze in the 2012 edition in London, no Indian male player has reached the medal round at the Olympics.
Sen achieved this feat with a hard-fought victory over Chinese Taipei’s Chou Tien Chen 19-21, 21-15, 21-12 in a 76-minute men’s singles quarterfinal encounter.
Sen, the only Indian shuttler still in contention at the Paris Olympics, lost the first game after the Taipei player took a 5-2 lead. Although the Indian star leveled the score at 5-5, his rival continued to hold the upper hand and opened up a 14-9 lead, Sen again fought back for seven consecutive points to take a 17-15 lead. However, Chen could not be denied and won the game 21-19.
Sen took the lead in the second game but the Taipei player remained behind and after a quick exchange of points they were level at 13-13 as the Indian shuttler, a former World Championship bronze medalist, took control of the proceedings and won five consecutive points to open an 18-13 gap. He won the game 21-15 and took the game to a decision.
Sen was at the top of his game in the decider as he took control of proceedings 2-3 and opened up a 9-4 lead. Although his Chinese Taipei opponent tried to fight back, Sen maintained the advantage by winning the game 21–12 to win the match and secure a place in the semi-finals.
Lakshya Sen will next face top seeds Viktor Axelsen of Denmark and Loh Kean Yew of Indonesia.
