A CHICAGO baseball fan suffered an embarrassing fall from grace after injuring himself so badly he had to be carried away by stadium officials.
The event took place during the ninth inning of the matchup between the Cubs and White Sox at Guaranteed Rate Field on Saturday night.
According to the observationPort journalist Josh Frydman, the fan “tried to jump the left center wall, appeared to injure his foot and is now being attended to by security!”
Frydman added later: “Waiting outside the Cubs clubhouse, the injured fan was being carried away with a cast/brace on his leg. As he passed us, he yelled, ‘TMZ, baby!” Lol.”
The Fox broadcast chose not to show the fan on the field.
But announcers Kevin Kugler and AJ Pierzynski did their best to describe the action.
“During the mid-inning changeover, a fan came off the field, made a run at everyone and threw it away,” Kugler said.
“And it looks like a second fan on the field, on the track, in the center left of the field, where imitation would perhaps not be the most sincere form of flattery. Because he didn’t get very far.”
Pierzynski added: “I think he’s hurt. He looks hurt. I think they’re going to have to bring the cart to get him off the field.”
The incident was so serious that it disrupted the game while fans were receiving assistance.
“Well, that’s a pretty significant wall in the center of the field,” Kugler added.
“It’s one thing to see a big league player climb the wall to try and make a catch. It’s another thing for an Average Joe to fall out of the stands.
“You land on a very difficult runway. Now they’ve got him.
“And he is limping very carefully, with the help of many security guards, to get him off the field.”
The broadcast duo then mocked the fan for getting injured and delaying the game.
“You plan the whole game to do something stupid,” Kugler said.
“And then you really do something stupid.
“Well, it’s a way to contain the Cubs’ momentum,” Pierzynski added.
“Have Héctor Neris stand out on the mound and think a little before trying to close out the game.”
“I’m not sure a broken leg is worth holding back momentum,” Kugler responded.
“Just don’t get on the field,” Pierzynski said.
The pair then asked fans not to do the same.
“And again, you’re jumping from the stands over the wall in center field. It’s further than you think,” Kugler said.
“And there is a small gap. Especially here at Guaranteed Rate Field, where these people are,” Pierzynski added.
“There is probably a distance of two to three feet between where they are sitting and the actual wall.
“So you have to jump that too – and then land on the field. Please don’t do that.”
