BEFORE his illustrious NFL career, Patrick Mahomes also played baseball thanks to his upbringing.
Mahomes grew up watching his MLB father, Patrick Mahomes Sr., closely and following in his footsteps.
Over seven seasons with the Kansas City Chiefs, Mahomes won three Super Bowls, three Super Bowl MVPs and two NFL MVPS.
The 28-year-old is on the best trajectory ever and needs four Super Bowls to tie with NFL icon Tom Brady.
But Mahomes’ athletic origins began in baseball.
When he was born in 1992, the Texas native’s father, Mahomes Sr., was a reliever for the Minnesota Twins.
Mahomes Sr. played 11 more seasons in the MLB and appeared for five more franchises.
Due to his career, young Mahomes was able to frequent MLB clubs and dugouts.
He was able to be around the league’s stars, including the late greats Kirby Puckett and Alex Rodriguez.
Mahomes played shortstop growing up and played for his Tyler, Texas team in the 2010 Junior League World Series.
In high school, he played three sports, including baseball, football, and basketball.
Mahomes’ strong arm was showcased on the diamond as he topped out at 97 miles per hour on his fastball.
During a high school baseball game, he threw a no-hitter with 16 strikeouts while also recording three hits on offense.
Mahomes was ranked as the 133rd right-handed pitcher and the 389th ranked high school pitcher in the entire country.
While the then-high school senior signed to play football for the Texas Tech Raiders, the Detroit Tigers were exploring Mahomes before the 2014 MLB Draft.
They drafted him in the 37th round of that year’s draft.
But Mahomes stayed with the Red Raiders, as his final professional baseball contract would be nowhere near the potential lucrative deal he would receive after a stellar college football career.
He played college baseball for Texas Tech his freshman year, recording just two hits and one relief appearance.
Mahomes was also a backup quarterback that year.
After one season as a reserve, Mahomes became Texas Tech’s starting quarterback in his second season.
He continued to play baseball in college, but made the decision before his junior season to leave the sport to focus on football.
Mahomes’ decision would be a wise one, as he totaled an impressive 41 touchdowns in 2016.
He was drafted by the Chiefs in the first round of the 2017 NFL Draft.
And Mahomes won his first Super Bowl in the 2019-20 season and ended up signing a 10-year contract worth up to $503 million.
