Legendary sportscaster Rod Black had a special MLB moment with his son.
Black was a longtime MLB announcer, but his son took center stage on Tuesday.
Rod’s son, Tyler, made his MLB debut on Tuesday for the Milwaukee Brewers with his father in attendance.
In the bottom of the third inning, Tyler hit a double to center field for his first career hit.
In the fifth inning, Tyler came up to bat again, and this time the Bally Sports staff set up a microphone for Rod so he could announce his son’s hit.
Tyler didn’t disappoint his father on the call and hit a single to the right side of the infield.
“And there’s a base hit to right field from my boy Tyler Black,” Rod shouted into the broadcast.
“There it is. Ah, there it is. Two for two.”
Rod cried as he was able to combine his long career with his son’s special accomplishments.
Black began working as a sportscaster at age 19 and quickly became the host of the Winnipeg Jets’ NHL broadcasts.
In 1990, Rod moved to Toronto’s CTV Sports team, where he broadcast events such as the 1992 Summer Olympics and 1994 Winter Olympics.
In 1999 he began working at TSN after it was acquired by CTV.
There, Rod did play-by-play for CFL on TSN, NBA on TSN, golf and international hockey coverage.
He also served as a broadcaster for the Toronto Blue Jays for CTV and TSN from 1999 to 2000 and from 2002 to 2009.
“That was incredible,” reporter Sophia Minnaert said after Tyler’s second hit.
“He has tears in his eyes. Everyone, this is an incredible moment for the Black family.”
Tyler Black was selected in the first round of the 2021 MLB Draft by the Brewers with the 33rd pick.
Before being called up this season, Tyler was batting .303 with five home runs and 18 RBI. He also stole three bases.
And there’s a base hit to right field from my boy, Tyler Black.
Black Rod
After the game, Black only had one thought on his mind after his first at-bats and the Brewers’ victory: his family.
“I’m very lucky they’re here,” he said.
Fans were moved by the moment for Tyler and his father, and shared their well wishes on social media.
“What a moment, it was a special moment for both of them,” said a fan.
“This is a fantastic moment for Tyler and Rod! It must be incredibly special to cite your son’s success during his MLB debut. Here’s to many more successes in Tyler’s career!” another fan said.
“I love this for them,” said a third fan.
