FORMER Chicago Cubs star Dexter Fowler graduated with honors from the MLB as a World Series champion.
Now, the 38-year-old MLB icon has returned to Penn State to complete his degree in organizational and professional communications.
After an illustrious high school career, Fowler rejected college offers from Harvard and Miami to go straight to the major leagues.
Fowler was drafted by the Colorado Rockies in 2004 and went on to star for the Houston Astros, Cubs, St. Louis Cardinals and Los Angeles Angels.
The center fielder won a World Series with the Cubs in 2016, the year he was also named an MLB All-Star.
Despite earning more than $100 million during his career, Fowler is committed to completing his college degree after retiring.
“My parents always wanted me to go to school, so I promised them I would come back.” Fowler told Penn State’s website.
“My father negotiated in my contract that I would receive four years of paid school.
“I’m a man of my word, so I came back to get my degree.”
Fowler said he chose Penn State in large part because he could complete his studies remotely.
“Being able to complete my studies remotely was really important to me,” Fowler said.
“I own two companies and I’m always doing a lot of things, so it was great to be able to do everything online.”
Fowler now works as a broadcaster and has his own production company, Fowlball Productions, as well as a management company, 400 Ventures.
“After I retired, I wanted to own my own content,” Fowler said.
“With the help of my partner, we started this production company, as well as a management company.
“We currently manage some athletes and artists.”
Fowler chose a communications degree to help him in his new career.
“I chose my major because I wanted to leverage communication skills to help people in the workplace and at my production company,” Fowler said.
“Learning a lot of these skills beforehand definitely helped.
“I gained a lot of informal communication skills through baseball.
“I really think going through life and then going back to college made it a lot more enjoyable.”
Fowler received his Penn State degree at the College of the Liberal Arts commencement ceremony on May 4.
