‘You can’t be messing up.’ MLB commentator criticizes ’embarrassing’ referee’s technical failure in Mets vs. Phillies
AN MLB commentator wasn’t afraid to call out the umpires during a technical glitch in the New York Mets-Philadelphia Phillies game.
The sequence during the MLB game also occurred in the 10th inning.
3
3
The Phillies were ready to bat in the top of the tenth inning with the score tied at 4.
With a runner on third base, Mets reliever Sean Reid-Foley threw a 3-2 fastball to Nick Castellanos that went high for ball four.
The Mets TV broadcast’s scorebug showed a full count before the 3-2 pitch.
After the throw, Castellanos won first base.
However, the umpires huddled together and lost track of Castellanos’ hit count.
Mets manager Carlos Mendoza came out to see what the fuss was about.
Mets SNY announcer Keith Hernandez was not happy when he realized why the game was stopped.
“Oh, man,” Hernandez said. “You can’t be messing up… oh, man. That’s… What do you have an indicator for?”
The umpires finally got on the headset and used replay to confirm that Castellanos should have been at first base.
“This is embarrassing,” Hernandez said of the situation.
“That shouldn’t happen at the Major League level.”
It is possible that the umpires used the scoreboard to keep track of pitch counts.
Although the SNY TV broadcast showed an accurate pitch count, the Citi Field jumbotron possibly displayed a 2-2 count, leaving the umpires uncertain.
The next hitter was Phillies star Bryson Stott, who hit a sacrifice fly to score the runner from third.
3
Philadelphia took a 5-4 lead and didn’t look back, defeating the Mets in 10 innings.
The Phillies rallied from a 4-2 deficit in the ninth inning when closer Edwin Diaz botched the defense, giving up two runs.
Five Major MLB Rule Changes in 2024
1. The pitch clock is reduced from 20 to 18 seconds with runners on base. It will remain at 15 seconds with the bases empty.
2. When a pitching change is made, the inning clock will reset to 2:00 instead of 2:15 as happened last year.
3. Teams will only be able to visit four mounds per game in 2024, compared to five last season.
4. Fielders and fielders who block bases will be cited for obstruction by the umpires.
5. The runners’ lane from home plate to first base has been widened to include the dirt between the grass and the white line.
Philadelphia is first in the NL East with a league-best 30-13 record, while the fourth-place Mets have a 19-22 record.
