That’s because Birmingham-Southern, Alabama closes after 168 years on May 31.

Meanwhile, the 2024 Division III MCWS is scheduled to begin two weeks later on June 14.

The team learned the news in an impromptu meeting with coach Jan Weisberg a few months earlier.

“We really didn’t know until the moment Coach Weisberg walked in and you could see the look on his face,” junior outfielder Eli Steadman said. ESPN.

“It wasn’t something normal, it was something that – he was obviously devastated by the news.

“And I’m very devastated to have to tell us this news.”

Weisberg and his two assistants learned he would be unemployed shortly before the meeting.

“This allowed us to help teach life moments,” the Panthers coach said.

“That’s one of the great things about sport.

“It’s a lot like death in that it’s okay to have these emotions and to grieve what we’re losing. But we still have to find a way to live.

“And we told them, ‘Hey man, for the next three weeks or two months, we’re going to be with you every step of the way.'”

Birmingham-Southern battles Denison University for a spot in the World Series.

Game 1 of the D-III Super Regionals best-of-three series takes place on Friday, May 24.

All three matchups will take place in Denison.

Home runs and boomsticks

MLB is back in London for the third time this summer when the Philadelphia Phillies take on the New York Mets.

The London Stadium will transform from a football field to a baseball field for the June 8 and 9 spectacle.

Fans attending games can indulge in some extravagant stadium menu items, like boomstick nachos (pictured) and a 2-foot boomstick hot dog.

The New York Yankees won both games in 2019 against the rival Boston Red Sox.

And the Chicago Cubs split their series with the St Louis Cardinals when the teams meet in 2023.

And in the current situation, Weisberg doesn’t mind playing away from home.

“Just with all the emotions we’ve been facing,” he said Atlético.

“To not have it on our shoulders, ‘God, this could be the last game on this bench.’”

Birmingham-Southern has recorded nine 30-win seasons since 2010.

During that time, the Panthers won nine conference championships.

In 2019, they reached the D-III World Series championship game before losing 11-0 to Chapman University in the title game.
