ALEC Bohm thinks his Philadelphia Phillies team is motivated by the painful near misses of the last two years.

The Phillies are one of the hottest teams in baseball after a hot start to the 2024 season.

Philadelphia have lived up to preseason expectations so far during the campaign after coming agonizingly close to recent glory.

Bohm, 27, hit a home run during the 2022 World Series, which he lost to the Houston Astros.

Philly followed that heartache by losing 4-3 in the National League Championship Series last season.

“Anytime you get there and get that close, it definitely adds fuel to the fire,” Bohm said.

“It’s been a long time since the Phillies made the playoffs.

“After two years of failure, it’s definitely something every guy on that clubhouse has thought about when they’re at home, in the off-season, working, going into Spring Training and throughout the year.

“We are a team that over the last four or five years has gained more and more talent and now some of the young guys have emerged and played well.

“I think it’s just a reflection of the organization for a while and how far it’s come.”

The Phillies can count on a loud atmosphere at their home ground of Citizens Bank Park, making it a difficult place to win games.

Bohm knows firsthand how relentless the Philadelphia fans can be as he had an incident with his own fans in 2022.

The third baseman was sarcastically applauded for making a play and was later seen telling a teammate, “I hate this place.”

He issued an immediate apology and stated that emotions got the better of him.

Since then, Bohm has become a key part of the Phillies lineup and counts on the home fans to give the team a boost.

He said: “People say what they say about Philadelphia sports fans, but at the end of the day I think they’re just a very competitive fan base.

Home runs and boomsticks

MLB is back in London for the third time this summer when the Philadelphia Phillies take on the New York Mets.

The London Stadium will transform from a football field to a baseball field for the June 8th and 9th spectacle.

Fans attending games can indulge in some extravagant stadium menu items, like boomstick nachos (pictured) and a 2-foot boomstick hot dog.

The New York Yankees won both games in 2019 against the rival Boston Red Sox.

And the Chicago Cubs split their series with the St Louis Cardinals when the teams meet in 2023.

“They want to win and the players obviously want to win.

“When you put all of this together and the team starts to have success, the whole city seems to feed off of that and rally around the team.

“Everyone shows up every night putting all their energy into winning the game.”

Bohm hopes his team can get the same kind of momentum when they visit London in a few weeks’ time.

The Philadelphia Phillies will face their rival New York Mets in a two-game series in the Atlantic Ocean on June 8-9.

Philadelphia won three of the four games the teams played this month — both at Citi Field in New York before the two in Philadelphia were split.
