FOR OVER three decades, Angel Hernandez has been an MLB umpire.

During his career, he umpired two World Series championships and three All-Star games.

Why did Angel Hernandez retire from MLB and what did he say about his career?

On May 27, 2024, Angel Hernandez revealed that he was retiring from MLB to spend more time with his family.

His retirement is believed to be effective immediately.

He refereed his last game on May 9 of the aforementioned year.

In a statement, Hernandez announced: “Starting with my first major league game in 1991, I had the great experience of living my childhood dream of umpiring in the major leagues.

“There is nothing better than working in a profession you enjoy.

“I valued the camaraderie of my colleagues and the friendships I made along the way, including our locker room attendants in every city.

“I decided I want to spend more time with my family.”

“It goes without saying that there have been many positive changes in the game of baseball since I entered the profession.

“This includes the expansion and promotion of minorities.

“I’m proud to have been an active participant in that goal while I was a major league umpire.”

When did Hernandez join MLB?

In 1991, Hernandez umpired his first MLB game and became an official member of the team in 1993.

Since then, he has umpired three All-Star games, two World Series tournaments and eight League championships.

Before becoming a league referee, he called games for the Florida State League, Carolina League, Southern League, American Association and Inter-Alliance.

Where is Hernández from?

Born on August 26, 1961, Hernandez is a native of Havana, Cuba.

During his childhood, his family moved to Hialeah, Florida.

He lives with his wife, Maria, and their two daughters in Loxahatchee, Florida.

Hernandez’s first umpiring job was in the Florida State League.
