With the Dodgers leading 9-3 in the top of the eighth inning, Mets pitcher Lopez threw a 2-1 slider to Dodgers star Freddie Freeman that nearly struck the pitch.

The Mets catcher pointed to third base umpire Ramon De Jesus to ask if he thought Freeman had swung, and the umpire ruled it was not a hit.

This didn’t seem to please Lopez, who barked at De Jesus.

The two yelled at each other until Lopez ejected Lopez from the game.

Lopez was frustrated by the call and walked off the mound and into the dugout, but not before throwing his glove into the stands.

It was unclear what Lopez said to get him ejected from the game.

The Mets TV broadcast commented on the situation as SNY man Gary Cohen told viewers he believed Lopez was sent to the clubhouse early.

“De Jesus has a short fuse,” Mets icon and TV analyst Keith Hernandez said on the broadcast.

Lopez then walked off the mound and threw his glove over the net into the stands.

The glove dropped toward a sea of Dodgers fans.

And a fan was seen raising his fan in celebration of winning the souvenir.

“That’s where the Mets are right now. It’s not good optics,” Hernandez added.

Hernandez was referring to the eighth inning as well as the Mets’ 2024 season.

New York and Los Angeles were tied at 3 in the eighth inning when reliever Adam Ottavino gave up two runs.

He was replaced by Lopez, who allowed four more runs, including a two-run home run by superstar Shohei Ohtani.

The Mets entered Wednesday having lost the previous two games to the Dodgers – both in doubleheaders on Tuesday.

New York has a disappointing 22-33 record, and 19 of its losses have come in the month of May.

The Mets announced Wednesday that two-time All-Star closer Edwin Diaz, who has had a terrible campaign thus far, has been placed on the 15-day IL due to a shoulder injury.

And New York’s star first baseman Pete Alonso left Wednesday’s game after being hit in the right hand after trying to check his swing on a pitch.

The Mets are in fourth place in the NL East and are just three games behind the last-place Miami Marlins, who are currently in sell-off mode.
