The Washington Nationals have cut ties with outfielder Victor Robles.

Robles had several chances to establish himself with the Nationals, but was never able to make a lasting impression.

Robles was designated for assignment on Monday to make room for Lane Thomas, who is returning from the injured list.

“It was definitely exciting,” coach Dave Martinez said.

“Those are always the hardest days when you have to lose a player, especially a guy like Vic who I’ve known for many years.

“All I can say to him is that I wish him the best.”

The 27-year-old outfielder was signed by the Nationals in 2013 as part of their international signing class.

He quickly evolved into one of MLB’s top prospects and made his team debut in 2017.

Robles won the World Series with the Nationals in 2019, as well as finishing sixth in Rookie of the Year voting.

In his best season, Robles was a .255 hitter with 17 home runs and 65 RBI to his name.

However, this year he has hit just .120 with no home runs and two RBI.

Thomas, the player replacing Robles on the Nationals roster, shared how difficult it is to see Robles go.

“I’ve become very close to Vic over the last few years,” Thomas said.

“That’s just an unfortunate part of what we do. There are so many places.

“I hope to see you here on the field soon, if anyone takes the risk.”

Patrick Corbin, who was one of the Nationals’ best pitchers in 2019, shared how good Robles was and hopes he can return to form.

“He hit 17 homers, he hit for average, he was an all-around player,” Corbin said.

Home runs and boomsticks

MLB is back in London for the third time this summer when the Philadelphia Phillies take on the New York Mets.

The London Stadium will transform from a football field to a baseball field for the June 8th and 9th spectacle.

Fans attending games can indulge in some extravagant stadium menu items, like boomstick nachos (pictured) and a 2-foot boomstick hot dog.

The New York Yankees won both games in 2019 against the rival Boston Red Sox.

And the Chicago Cubs split their series with the St Louis Cardinals when the teams meet in 2023.

“Having a guy like that at the end of the lineup with a veteran team like ours, he played a huge role on that team.

“He played very well in center field for us. Injuries, I think, may have played into some of the things where he wasn’t able to get to where everyone thought he would be.

“But he still has time – he’s young. And maybe just a change of scenery might help him.”

Robles is just 27 years old and has plenty of time to figure things out and revitalize his career.
