The Boston Red Sox’s game against the New York Yankees was postponed Friday night due to weather.
The game had already been moved from 7:10 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. as a courtesy to fans interested in watching the Boston Celtics face the Dallas Mavericks in Game 4 of the NBA Finals, MLB said in a statement.
The Celtics will play at the American Airlines Center in Dallas, Texas.
However, when fans arrived at Fenway Park in Boston, Massachusetts for the game, they were greeted with a tarp on the field because the game was delayed.
“#FenwayWeather Update: Due to inclement weather climate tonight’s first pitch is late. We will provide further updates as they become available,” the Red Sox tweeted.
Yankees reporter Bryan Hoch tweeted that Fenway’s ground crew showed up on the field around 6:55 p.m.
“It looks like we’ll have baseball soon!” he he wrote.
Hoch later reported that the game would start at approximately 7:40 p.m. – and he wasn’t far away.
The first pitch of the game was thrown just minutes after his estimate.
But that didn’t stop fans from making jokes about the irony of the situation.
“No more early starts,” joked one fan on X, formerly known as Twitter.
“So Boston changed the start time 30 minutes earlier because of the Celtics game, only for the game to be delayed by rain,” replied another.
“You have to laugh,” wrote a third person.
“Let’s get this game started, BOYS!!!! Go YANKSSS!!!” one bedroom added.
“Red Sox manipulating the climate to avoid this L, as shameless,” joked one user.
RIVALRY, rain or shine
Friday’s game will be the first time the Red Sox play the Yankees in the 2024 season, continuing their historic rivalry falling in love more than a century ago.
The Yankees and Red Sox first tested their skills against each other in 1903, just a few years after the Yankees were formed in New York.
Competition between players on the two teams increased rapidly as they both competed in major league competition, peaking in 1919.
That was the year that Red Sox owner at the time, Harry Frazee, decided to trade all-time great Babe Ruth to the Yankees to raise money to finance a musical production, according to the Washington Post.
Five Major MLB Rule Changes in 2024
1. The pitch clock is reduced from 20 to 18 seconds with runners on base. It will remain at 15 seconds with the bases empty.
2. When a pitching change is made, the inning clock will reset to 2:00 instead of 2:15 as it did last year.
3. Teams will only be able to visit four mounds per game in 2024, compared to five last season.
4. Defenders and defenders blocking bases will be called for obstruction.
5. The runners’ lane from home plate to first base has been widened to include the dirt between the grass and the white line.
The deal netted Frazee $125,000 upfront and a $300,000 loan — even though Ruth broke the record that year for annual home runs.
According to some die-hard fans, this risky pick ushered in decades of losing for the Red Sox and the beginning of a new era for the Yankees.
“The Curse of the Bambino” is responsible for handing the Yankees 26 world championships between 1920 and 2003.
The Red Sox broke the “curse” a year later by defeating the Yankees in the 2004 American League Championship Series by a shocking score of 10-3.
The team won the World Series Championship in the same year.
The teams last met on September 14, 2023, when the Yankees again emerged victorious, defeating the Red Sox 6-5.
