COVERAGE of the Tampa Bay Rays’ 11-2 loss to the San Francisco Giants on Saturday was hit by a bizarre technical issue.

In the top of the eighth inning, the Rays opted to make a change on the mound, bringing in catcher Ben Rortvedt.

Ben Rortvedt took over pitching duties for the Tampa Bay Rays in the top of the eighth inning during their 11–2 loss to the San Francisco Giants.

However, it appears that NBC Sports Bay Area was not prepared for Rortvedt’s arrival.

While on mount, where the announcer graphic should have shown his name, it instead said, “Current pitcher’s last name.”

The error drew many responses from confused MLB fans on X, formerly known as Twitter.

“This should look great on the new jerseys,” said one of those fans.

“I’m excited to see when Cash Considerations makes his major league debut,” joked a second.

“Facing Currentpitcher Lastname is difficult,” added a third.

While a fourth commented: “Someone should be fired for this.”

Rortvedt ended up pitching two innings, finishing with a strikeout, three hits allowed and a home run by Matt Chapman.

“I really appreciate Ben,” coach Kevin Cash said after the game.

“Your curveball stinks,” he joked.

“And I told him after the first inning – ‘Let’s eliminate that pitch and see if we can throw that 70 mph pitch.’

“But he did a good job. Look, it’s funny after the fact.

“In the moment you really appreciate what the guys are doing and I know the bullpen does.”

The Rays’ loss ended a solid three-game winning streak.

They currently sit in third place in the AL East at 8-7, behind the Baltimore Orioles at 8-6 and the New York Yankees at 12-3.

The Rays will host the Giants once again on Sunday before the Los Angeles Angels come to town on Monday to begin a four-game stretch.

Tampa Bay was 2-1 against the Angels before the Giants series, including a 7-1 victory on Monday.

They hope to pick up where they left off ahead of a potentially tough series against the Yankees that begins on Friday, April 19.

New York went 4-1 this week, with their final game against the Cleveland Guardians set for Sunday.
